Rangiroa Atoll

Rangiroa lagoon

The Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia are composed of about 80 islands scattered over 800,000 km². Rangiroa Atoll is located in the Northwestern Tuamotu Islands at 350km from Tahiti. Rangiroa (170km-perimeter and 1,600km²) is the largest atoll in French Polynesia and the second largest atoll in the world.

On Northern Rangiroa Atoll, two natural channels known as Tiputa and Avatoru passes connect the Pacific Ocean to Rangiroa lagoon. Both passes are traversed daily by strong outgoing and incoming currents due to flood and ebb tides.

Tiputa Pass and its surroundings are oases of biodiversity in the Tropical Pacific Ocean and famous dive sites. You may watch numerous fish species (e.g., barracudas, wrasses, surgeonfish, parrotfish, snappers, sharks, rays), sea turtles, and even marine mammals (dolphins). Different bird species (e.g., frigatebirds, boobies, noddis, and white terns) may also be sighted on the area.

The Rangiroa Diving Center is located next to Tiputa Pass.
